BBC NEWS | Business | Weak September data hits markets

The poor data came from the Institute for Supply Management's (ISM's) business barometer for Chicago, which unexpectedly shrank this month.

The report overshadowed the earlier announcement that the US economy contracted less than previously estimated between April and June.

Wall Street's main Dow Jones index ended Wednesday down 0.3%.

It closed 30 points lower at 9,712, while the Nasdaq fell 1.6 points or 0.1% to 2,122.
